Melissani Cave Boat Tours Compared: Prices, Pickups & What's Included (2026)

Two questions decide what a Melissani Cave tour actually costs you, and the tour listings themselves rarely answer either one. The first is whether the price is for the whole vehicle or for each person. The second is whether the municipal cave entry ticket sits inside that price or on top of it. Get both wrong and a €150 tour can end up costing more per head than a €330 one.

Kefalonia's operators are genuinely inconsistent on both points. Some quote one price for the group, some quote per person. Some bundle the entry fee in; two of them exclude it in writing. Below is a tabulation of every Melissani Cave tour product we could find on sale for 2026 — twelve of them, from six Kefalonia operators plus the GetYourGuide listings — with the pricing basis and the inclusions stated for each. Where an operator does not publish something, we say so rather than fill the gap.

🧾 The short answer: is the boat ride included?

There is no separate boat ticket at Melissani. The rowboat circuit is part of the cave entry — the €10 municipal ticket covers the queue and the boat. So "is the boat ride included in my tour?" really means "does my tour include the cave entry?" Avalon Travel and Kefalonia Daily Tours include entry fees. Adventure Kefalonia and Avgerinos Travel's Thursday group trip exclude them, which adds €10 per person (or €13 for the combined cave ticket) on top of the advertised price.

💶 Melissani Cave tour prices 2026: the full comparison

⚠️ The per-group trap

Reading that table top to bottom, Avalon's €1,280 looks like the most expensive tour on the island — and for two people it genuinely is, at €640 each. But €1,747 for twelve guests is €145.58 each, and Kefalonia Daily Tours' €260 half-day, booked for eight, works out at €32.50 each. Same cave, same island, same afternoon: roughly twenty times the per-person price. The number you should compare is never the headline figure. It is the headline figure divided by the number of people actually travelling.

📊 What those prices work out to per person

Per-group and per-person prices cannot be compared until they sit on the same basis. The column below is our arithmetic — the operator's published price divided by the group size printed in its published band. We have not interpolated between bands, and where an operator publishes no maximum group size we have left the figure blank rather than guess.

Tour Published price Basis used Per person
Kefalonia Daily Tours — half-day highlights from €260 per group 8 guests (their 1–8) €32.50
Kefalonia Daily Tours — All in a Day, 8 h from €330 per group 8 guests (their 1–8) €41.25
Kefalonia Daily Tours — small group, 8 h from €65 per person already per person €65.00
Avgerinos Travel — Thursday group trip €45 per person, entry fees excluded plus the €13 combined cave ticket €58.00
Adventure Kefalonia — 10 h full day €420 for 1–2, plus €30 per extra person 8 guests (their maximum) €75.00
GetYourGuide — caves, 4 h about €60–65 per person already per person about €60–65
Avalon Travel — 6 h private, 11–12 guests €1,747 per group 12 guests €145.58
Avalon Travel — 6 h private, 1–2 guests €1,280 per group 2 guests €640.00

Avgerinos Travel — private 4 h / 6 h / 8 h from €200 / €300 / €480 per group no group size published not calculable
NK Travel Kefalonia — private 4–8 h from €150 per group no group size published not calculable

💡 How to read a Melissani tour price in thirty seconds

  • Check the basis. "Per person" and "per group" are not the same number wearing different clothes.
  • Divide by your real group size. A private tour becomes cheap per head at eight and expensive per head at two.
  • Add the entry fee if it is excluded. That is €10 per adult at Melissani, or €13 for the combined Melissani and Drogarati ticket.
  • Then compare. Only at that point are two tours comparable at all.

🎫 Which tours include the €10 cave entry — and which do not

The municipal entry fee is the single biggest hidden variable in these prices, because it is the fee that also covers your boat. Adult entry to Melissani is €10, reduced to €5 for children aged 6–18, students, visitors over 65 and multi-child families, and free for children under 6, disabled visitors, unemployed visitors and permanent residents of the Municipality of Sami. Drogarati Cave is €6, or €13 for the combined ticket covering both caves.

Operator Cave entry fees What the operator publishes
Avalon Travel Kefalonia Included All entry fees, port and hotel pick-up and drop-off, private transportation, a local guide and bottled water. The lake boat is explicitly part of the tour: twelve-man rowboats, each with a rower, 10–15 minutes on the water.
Kefalonia Daily Tours — Kefalonia Jewels Included Entrance fees included, plus a Robola wine tasting.
Kefalonia Daily Tours — All in a Day Included Entrance fees included.
Kefalonia Daily Tours — small group Not stated The published price line carries no inclusion detail. Ask before booking.
Kefalonia Tours Not stated The booking page's included and not-included panels did not display when we checked, so we cannot confirm either way.
Adventure Kefalonia Not included The 10-hour full day includes a luxury car, an English and Spanish speaking driver, water and juice, and all taxes. Under "not included" the operator lists entrance fees — and the lake boat is not on its published inclusions list. Budget €10 per adult on top.
Avgerinos Travel — private tours Not stated No inclusion detail published on the private-tour price lines.
Avgerinos Travel — Thursday group trip Not included "Entrance fees are not included in the price." A €45 ticket is therefore about €58 including the combined cave ticket.
NK Travel Kefalonia Not stated No inclusion detail published with the price.
GetYourGuide listings Varies by listing Reseller listings bundle differently from one another. Read the "what's included" section of the individual listing before you buy: a listing that leaves the entry out hides €10 per adult that you pay at the gate instead.

The practical consequence is simple. A per-person price that includes entry is worth €10 more than a per-person price that does not, so Avgerinos's €45 Thursday trip is really a €58 ticket once you add the combined cave ticket — more than it first appears, not less. Applying that filter to the table above: Avalon's 6-hour private tour and Kefalonia Daily Tours' two private products are all-in; Adventure Kefalonia's €420 full day and Avgerinos's €45 Thursday trip are not.

⏱️ The two municipal priority tickets

Both are sold by the Municipality of Sami at the caves, not by the tour operators, and both appear in the municipality's published price table. They are easy to miss because no tour reseller advertises them.

  • Priority ticket — €40, published against each cave. The municipality's table prices the priority ticket at €40 in the Melissani column and €40 in the Drogarati column, and it does not state whether one purchase covers both caves, so treat it as one cave per ticket unless the cave confirms otherwise. It sits alongside the standard €10 and €13 tickets and is the option to consider if you have a fixed window — a cruise call, a ferry, an early flight — and cannot absorb an unpredictable wait.
  • Private guided tour — €400, published against each cave. Listed by the municipality as a private guided tour outside peak hours and priced at €400 in each cave column. The municipality does not state whether that figure is per person or per group, so confirm it with the cave before booking.

For most independent visitors neither is necessary. Queues are real, but they are concentrated in the middle of the day, and the caves are open daily from 09:00 to 18:00 in the current schedule with last entry thirty minutes before closing. Arriving at opening, or in the final two hours, avoids the worst of it for nothing. If you want to confirm how priority entry is administered on the day, the caves' direct line is +30 26740 22997.

🧮 The entry-ticket arithmetic: €10, €6, €13 — and the €3 the combined ticket saves

If you are visiting by car — or adding cave tickets to a tour that excludes them — this is the whole price list in one place.

Ticket Price Who it is for
Melissani, adult €10 Standard adult entry, including the boat ride
Melissani, reduced €5 Children 6–18, students, visitors over 65, multi-child families
Melissani, zero ticket Free Children under 6, disabled visitors, unemployed visitors, permanent residents of the Municipality of Sami
Drogarati, adult €6 Standard adult entry to the second cave
Drogarati, with a Melissani ticket €4 Adult entry to Drogarati on presentation of a Melissani ticket
Drogarati, reduced €3 Same reduced categories as Melissani
Drogarati, group ticket €9 Groups of more than 20 people, as published by the municipality
Combined ticket (Melissani and Drogarati) €13 adult, €10 reduced One ticket covering both caves
Priority ticket €40 Per cave, as published
Private guided tour €400 Per cave, outside peak hours, as published

Two adults buying separately pay €16 to see both caves — €10 for Melissani plus €6 for Drogarati. The combined ticket is €13, so it saves €3 per person, or €6 for a couple. It remains the cheapest of the plausible combinations even if you buy Melissani first and take the €4 Drogarati ticket on presentation of it: that route costs €14, one euro more than the combined ticket.

Two honest caveats. There is no family ticket in the municipal price table — the categories are adult, reduced and zero, and nothing else — so a family of four with two children aged 6–18 pays two combined adult tickets and two combined reduced tickets, €46 in total. And the municipality publishes no split-day rule for the combined ticket: it is not stated as valid across separate days, so plan to use it in one day.

🎟️ The cheapest honest way to do both caves

One combined ticket each: €13 per adult, €10 per reduced visitor. Two adults and two children aged 6–18: €46. Free for children under 6. Use it in a single day, and remember it includes the boat at Melissani — there is nothing further to buy at the water.

🚐 Pickups: Argostoli, Sami, Karavomylos and the port

Where you are staying decides which of these tours is even available to you. Argostoli is the island's capital and main port, and it sits roughly 30 km — about 40 minutes — from the cave. Sami is 2 km away, and the cave entrance is at Karavomylos, effectively on the edge of the village.

Public transport on Kefalonia is thin compared with most Greek islands, and many of the coast's best-known coves and beaches have no bus service at all. That makes a tour's pickup terms genuinely valuable rather than incidental. Avalon Travel includes port and hotel pick-up and drop-off in its price. Kefalonia Daily Tours publishes pickup zones covering Argostoli, Lassi and Lourdas. Adventure Kefalonia sends a car with an English and Spanish speaking driver but leaves the cave tickets to you on arrival. If you are staying in or near Sami, Avgerinos Travel is the local operator and its Thursday group trip is the one product in this list built specifically around the two caves plus Antisamos.

If you are coming off a cruise ship, the practical arithmetic is the same as for everyone else, with one extra constraint: your window is fixed, so the difference between a bundled tour and an unbundled one matters less than being certain of the return time. Our cruise shore excursion guide covers that separately.

Visitor in a wooden boat on the turquoise underground lake of Melissani Cave
The lake circuit is shared and short: a wooden rowboat with a rower, on the water for about 10–15 minutes.

🛶 What the boat ride itself is actually like

It is worth knowing what you are buying before comparing tour operators, because nobody is selling a private yacht here. The Melissani boat is a shared wooden rowboat with a rower at the oars — the operator Avalon Travel describes twelve-man boats each with their own rower, on the water for 10–15 minutes, while the Greek tourism authority's own page on the cave describes boat trips of around 15 minutes. The realistic range across sources is 10 to 20 minutes on the water. Expect to be grouped with other visitors regardless of which tour brought you there.

The light is the reason the timing matters. The cave's roof is open, and on a clear day sunlight drops through onto the lake and turns the water the colour that fills every photograph of Melissani. Independent guides describe the strongest light as falling around midday — roughly 11:00 to 14:00 — from late spring through the summer. It is a weather-dependent effect rather than a daily fixture: on an overcast day, or outside that window, the cave is still worth seeing but the colour is noticeably less intense.

⏳ Crowds, queues and when to go

Melissani is a small site with one short circuit on the water, and the queue in the middle of the day reflects that. Visitor reviews from summer 2026 describe a typical wait of 25 to 45 minutes, with reports of waits stretching to around two hours between midday and 14:00 in July. Those figures come from visitor reports rather than any official count, and no operator in this comparison publishes a queue guarantee — so treat them as the shape of the problem rather than a timetable.

⚠️ Timing beats paying

If you are driving yourselves, the queue is the thing to plan around, not the price. Arrive at opening at 09:00 or in the last two hours before closing and you will usually walk on. If you are touring both caves, do Drogarati first and reach Melissani for the midday light — that way the wait happens while the light is at its best instead of eating into it.

🚗 Doing it yourselves: what a tour actually buys you

Set the tour prices against the ticket counter and the picture is clear. Two adults seeing both caves pay €26 with combined tickets. A family of four with two children aged 6–18 pays €46. That is the entire cave cost of a self-drive visit — the boat included, because it is part of the entry.

What a tour adds on top of that is transport, a driver who knows the roads, commentary, and in two cases a wine tasting or a beach stop. Whether that is worth €58 per person on Avgerinos's Thursday trip, or about €60–65 per person on the four-hour GetYourGuide run, or €32.50 each on a private half-day for eight, depends on whether you have a car, how many of you there are, and how much you value not driving the Argostoli road yourself. We have deliberately not put a number on car hire or taxi fares here, because those vary with season and supplier; what is fixed is the ticket arithmetic above.

🕐 Hours, and why you should check them before you book

Melissani and Drogarati share one schedule, and it is not a fixed annual routine. The Municipality of Sami sets opening hours in batches and announces each one separately, so the timetable changes several times a year. The schedule in force after 3 July 2026 has both caves open daily from 09:00 to 18:00 with last entry thirty minutes before closing.

Winter 2026–27 hours had not been published when we checked, and we are not going to guess at them. If you are travelling between November and March, check the municipality's own pages or call the caves on +30 26740 22997 before you set out — and if you are booking a tour in that window, ask the operator to confirm the cave is open on your date, because a tour that runs to a closed cave is the one failure mode no price comparison can protect you against. Our opening hours page carries the current position.

Two practical notes for the day itself. There is no restaurant at the cave — a seasonal kiosk serves drinks and light snacks, and lunch belongs to Sami or Karavomylos a few minutes away. And access to the lake is by a stepped descent to the water; the cave-entrance viewing area above the lake is described as reachable by visitors who cannot manage those steps or use the boats, while the boats themselves cannot take wheelchairs. The municipality publishes no accessibility statement, so treat that as descriptive rather than an official commitment.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Is the boat ride included in the Melissani Cave tour price?

At the cave, yes — the rowboat ride has no separate ticket and is covered by the entry fee. In a tour price, it depends on whether the operator includes the cave entry. Avalon Travel Kefalonia and Kefalonia Daily Tours include entrance fees. Adventure Kefalonia and Avgerinos Travel's Thursday group trip explicitly exclude them, so the boat is effectively an extra €10 per adult (or €13 for both caves) on those tours.

How much is the Melissani Cave entry ticket in 2026?

€10 for adults, €5 reduced for children aged 6–18, students, visitors over 65 and multi-child families, and free for children under 6, disabled visitors, unemployed visitors and permanent residents of the Municipality of Sami. The combined ticket covering Melissani and Drogarati is €13 adult and €10 reduced — €3 less than buying the two caves separately at €10 and €6.

What does a private Melissani Cave tour cost for a group?

Published per-group prices for 2026 start at around €150 (NK Travel, 4–8 hours) and €200 (Kefalonia Tours half-day; Avgerinos Travel 4 hours), rising to €330 for Kefalonia Daily Tours' eight-hour private day and €420 plus €30 per extra person for Adventure Kefalonia's ten-hour full day. Avalon Travel's six-hour private tour is the premium option: €1,280 for one or two guests, rising to €1,747 for eleven or twelve. Divided across a full vehicle, the cheaper private tours land between €32.50 and €75 per person.

What is the cheapest way to do the Melissani boat ride?

Drive or take a taxi to the cave and buy a ticket at the gate: €10 per adult, which includes the boat. No operator in this comparison sells the boat separately, or for less than the ticket counter charges. If you are also visiting Drogarati, the €13 combined ticket is the cheapest way to do both.

Can I do Melissani and Drogarati in one day?

Yes, and most tours do exactly that — the two caves are a few minutes apart, and the four- to five-hour products on GetYourGuide and Avgerinos Travel's Thursday excursion both pair them. Independently, the €13 combined ticket covers both and saves €3 per adult. The municipality publishes no split-day rule for the combined ticket, so use it in a single day.

Can I skip the queue at Melissani Cave?

The Municipality of Sami publishes two tickets that address it: a priority ticket at €40 and a private guided tour outside peak hours at €400, each priced per cave in the municipal table rather than published as a single ticket covering both. No tour operator in this comparison publishes a queue guarantee. The free alternative is timing — arrive at 09:00 when the caves open, or in the last two hours before closing.

Do tour prices include pick-up from Argostoli or Sami?

It varies. Avalon Travel includes port and hotel pick-up and drop-off. Kefalonia Daily Tours publishes pickup zones covering Argostoli, Lassi and Lourdas. Avgerinos Travel is based in Sami, 2 km from the cave, and its Thursday group trip is the local option. Adventure Kefalonia and NK Travel both supply a vehicle and driver, but read the inclusion list on the booking page for the tour you are actually buying.

🔗 Plan your visit

Prices and inclusions in this comparison were read from each operator's own booking page in October 2026. Tour prices, group limits and inclusions change between seasons, so re-check the operator's page before you book — and if a listing does not state whether entry fees are included, ask, because on this island that single line can change the price of your day by €10 a head.
